How to Check If a Phone Is Carrier Unlocked

A carrier-locked phone can only connect to the network of the carrier it was originally sold through. If you put in a different carrier's SIM, it will either show "SIM not supported" or simply have no signal. An unlocked phone works with any compatible SIM worldwide.
For used phone buyers, this matters significantly. A phone locked to a carrier you don't use is worth considerably less — or nothing to you — even if it's in perfect condition.
Method 1 — The SIM Swap Test (Most Reliable)
Insert a SIM card from a different carrier and attempt to make a call or use mobile data. If the phone connects normally, it's unlocked. If it shows "SIM not supported," "SIM locked," or similar, it's carrier locked.
This test works on any phone and gives you a definitive answer. If you're buying in person, bring a SIM from a prepaid carrier (a cheap $10 prepaid SIM is a worthwhile investment before buying a used phone).
Note: some phones show a PIN prompt when an unknown SIM is inserted — this is the unlock code screen, confirming the phone is locked.
Method 2 — iPhone Settings
On iPhone, go to Settings → General → About and scroll to Carrier Lock. It will say either "No SIM restrictions" (unlocked) or the name of the carrier it's locked to. This is the quickest way to check an iPhone without a second SIM.
Note: this setting reflects the software status as the carrier set it — it should match the SIM test result, but the SIM test remains the definitive check.
Method 3 — Contact the Carrier
Call the carrier whose name the seller claims the phone is (or was) on, provide the IMEI, and ask whether the device is network unlocked. Most carriers will confirm this at no charge. It's a good cross-check if the SIM test isn't practical.

Method 4 — Android Carrier Lock Setting
On some Android phones (Samsung in particular), go to Settings → Connections → More Connection Settings → Network Unlock or similar. If you see an option to enter an unlock code, the phone is locked. On unlocked phones this option is usually absent or shows "No SIM lock."
Carrier Lock vs Blacklist: What's the Difference?
These are two completely separate things:
- Carrier lock — the phone is tied to one carrier. It can be removed by the carrier once the contract is paid off, or by the buyer requesting an unlock.
- Blacklist — the IMEI is flagged as stolen, lost, or fraudulent. No carrier will activate it. This cannot be removed by a buyer.

Can a Carrier-Locked Phone Be Unlocked?
Yes — legitimately, by requesting the carrier to unlock it. Most US carriers are required by law to unlock phones if the device is fully paid off and the account is in good standing. The process typically takes 1–5 business days and is usually free. After the unlock, a different carrier's SIM will work normally.
💡 Avoid third-party "IMEI unlock" services that charge money and promise instant unlocks. Legitimate unlocks only happen through the original carrier. These services may modify your phone's software in ways that aren't reversed, or may simply take your money and do nothing.
